If you saw this post a while back, you’ll know that I love quotes. I have a whole feature called Loquacious Literarity just to nurture my obsession with collecting verbal minutiae. I thought, since it is a new year and all, that it would be fun to share my favorite book quotes I collected in 2012. Check them out! I will of course share the books they came from and the talented authors who wrote them.

~There is the quote from Diggers pictured above. I haven’t read Diggers yet, but since it’s a Terry Pratchett book, it’s absolutely on my to-read list.

———-

~”Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying ‘End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH’, the paint wouldn’t even have time to dry.”

Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time (I read it in January 2012)

———-

~”Time is a drug. Too much of it kills you.”

Terry Pratchett, Small Gods (I read it in August 2012)

———-

~”I had grown up. I had learned that being a woman was knowing when to stand firm and when to compromise. I had learned to laugh and weep; I had learned that I was weak as well as strong. I had learned to love. I was no longer a rigid, upright tree that would not flex and bow, even though the gale threatened to snap it in two; I was the willow that bends and shivers and sways, and yet remains strong.”

Juliet Marillier, Seer to Sevenwaters (I read it in April 2012)

———-

~”All your life an unattainable ecstasy has hovered just beyond the grasp of your consciousness. The day is coming when you will wake to find, beyond all hope, that you have attained it, or else, that it was within your reach and you have lost it forever.”

C.S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain (I read it in June 2012)

———-

~”…Pray for the grace to realize that no matter where you are, you are in the presence of the Lord.”

Ann Spangler and Lois Tverberg, Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus (I read it in October)

———-

~”Seek freedom and become captive of your desires. Seek discipline and find your liberty.”

Frank Herbert, Chapterhouse: Dune (haven’t read yet)

———-

~”A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one.”

George R.R. Martin, A Dance With Dragons (haven’t read yet)

———-

~”He would have told her- he would have said, it matters not if you are here or there, for I see you before me every moment. I see you in the light of the water, in the swaying of the young trees in the spring wind. I see you int eh shadows of the great oaks, I hear your voice in the cry of the owl at night. You are the blood in my veins, and the beating of my heart. You are my first waking thought, and my last sigh before sleeping. You are- you are bone of my bone, and breath of my breath.”

Juliet Marillier, Daughter of the Forest (read it like a bazillion times…)

———-

~”Friendship is a deep oneness that develops when two people, speaking the truth in love to one another, journey together to the same horizon.”

Tim Keller, The Meaning of Marriage (read it in November 2012)
