WIP Wednesday: New Series, Great Reads of 2016, and More!

Happy Wednesday, everyone! Last week, I wasn’t able to get a #WIPWednesday up for you guys, so I wanted to be doubly sure that I was able to update you guys this week. Those that follow me on Instagram will know already that I finished the rough draft for Ancestors & Immortals Book 1. This is the story that was being serialized on Wattpad, but is on hiatus until I get it fully polished and completed. It’s title is Beneath the Mountain and I am excited to share more information about this series with you in the coming months.

In other news, all three Tales from Niflheim novels are currently with my editor! I cannot wait to update Night Bells and Silent Shades with their second editions and also release second edition print books. Once those things are done, we’ll talk about Book 3! I cannot WAIT to release preorder information and do a proper cover reveal (though if you want a sneak peak, you can check out my Facebook banner! :))

2016-01-23 16.10.48This weekend, I started the polishing on the rough draft of Beneath the Mountain, but I also got in a lot of great reading time. Pictured to the right, you can see me chillin’ in my snuggie reading Lindsay Buroker’s Dragon Blood Book 4: Patterns in the Dark. I am definitely hooked on this series now. Dragons, am I right? It’s a really great series and if you didn’t catch my previous post, you can check out my review of Blood Charged (DB, Book 3).

On the side, I’ve also been reading Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End to get a bit of classic sci-fi in my to-be-read list for 2016. So far, I’m SUPER enjoying how twisty and intriguing it is. I’ll definitely be reading more Clarke in the future. And not-book-related, but I also spent my life catching up on season one of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. AHHHHHH! So much fun. Love that show and all its silliness.

This week, I’ll be hard at work on polishing up the draft of Ancestors & Immortals Book 1 so I can get that off to my beta readers on February 1st. I’m hoping to hear back from my editor on all three Tales form Niflheim soon so I can get to work on revisions and final polishing.

How has your week been? Been reading anything interesting? I’m always looking for great new books to add to my 2016 Reading List!

My Review of Lindsay Buroker’s “Blood Charged”

I’m slowly catching up on Lindsay Buroker’s Dragon Blood series and book 3, Blood Charged helped me fully appreciate and feel hooked on the series!

Blood Charged (Dragon Blood, #3)Blood Charged by Lindsay Buroker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

So, not going to lie, I have had a bit of a hard time “getting into” the Dragon Blood series. I think part of it is that I miss Emperor’s Edge SO much and all of those characters. I also feel like having the two romances in book 1 and 2 of Dragon Blood felt a bit rushed to me after the slow building romances of the EE series. I don’t feel as attached to these romantic relationships because of that and it makes me wish there had been more time to build their connections and unresolved tensions, etc. That being said, these characters are DEFINITELY growing on me and I am particularly partial to Ridge and Tolemek. Jaxi is just THUH BOMBDIGGITY. This book felt a bit slow to me in the beginning (which is why I took it to 4 stars instead of 5), but really picked up later on and we were introduced more to Apex and Therrick (two characters I can’t WAIT to read more about). We also got to see a bit more information and hints about dragons appearing later in the series. She definitely got me hooked by the end and I woke up at 6:30 this morning to finish reading the book before I headed to work. At work on my fifteen minute break, I started the next book, Patterns in the Dark and am really looking forward to seeing where the characters and this series goes! ONWARD WE GO!

WIP Wednesday: New Editions for Tales from Niflheim 1 & 2!

2016-01-05 07.44.40

Happy WIP Wednesday, everyone! WIP Wednesdays are a chance to update you folks on my current manuscript projects, publishing, goals, and anything I might have in the hopper. I am very excited to share with you some of my works-in-progress today!

Night Bells (Tales from Niflheim #1) and Silent Shades (Tales from Niflheim #2) are getting second editions!

Since I updated the covers for books 1 and 2 to match the cover for book 3 that is coming out soon, I really wanted to do an interior re-edit as well. The first two books in the Tales from Niflheim series came out over three years ago and since I’m trying to refresh the series to match the upcoming release of book 3, I felt it made sense to make sure their styles and editing was up to snuff. My editor currently has Night Bells and is going through it with a fine toothed comb to see where we can make changes and make it a good solid second edition. As soon as she sends her edits back and I get to work on them, I’ll send her Silent Shades!

While she has Night Bells, I’m working on my personal edits to book 3! I’ll be releasing a cover reveal, blurb reveal, and more information on book 3 as soon as we begin updating books 1 and 2!

Night Bells and Silent Shades are getting new print editions!

I am SO excited about the new print editions I will be doing for the first two Tales from Niflheim. They will be matte, match the ebook covers, and have updated interiors as well. CANNOT wait!

All information about these second editions will come to you as soon as I have it. When I start releasing the new editions, stay tuned on my social media for some giveaways! 😀 A great way to stay up to date about my book releases and fun stuff like giveaways is by subscribing to my newsletter. You can do that here or on the top right of my sidebar.

What are you working on reading or writing at the moment? I’d love to hear!

My Review of Lindsay Buroker’s “Warrior Mage”

I am a ginormous Lindsay Buroker fan. I will pretty much read ANYTHING that woman writes (*cue the howling wind-like sound of a scream, “Lindsay Buroker…TAKE ALL MY MONEY!!!!”*). Without further ado or merriment, here is my review of the first installment in her Chains of Honor series, Warrior Mage.

Warrior Mage (Chains of Honor, #1)Warrior Mage by Lindsay Buroker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As a huge fan of Lindsay Buroker’s “Emperor’s Edge” series, I was thrilled to see her start another series in the same world. I was always fascinated with the non-Turgonian cultures she mentioned in the EE books, so getting a glimpse into the life of a normal Nurian young man was fabulous. I thoroughly enjoyed Yanko’s character. He’s timid, easily-flustered, underestimates his own abilities, and is thoroughly adorable with the female characters in the story. I liked him immediately. I look fondly upon him like one would a kid brother. I look forward to see the sorts of shenanigans he gets up to in future installments of the series. That being said, there were some oddities in the book that kept me from giving it 5 solid starts. The plot seemed quite “tame” and overly lighthearted compared to other books in this world. It was obvious there were subtle subplots woven beneath the surface, that I hope will be expanded upon further in other books (and I think this is the author’s intent). That being said, it was a thoroughly enjoyable first installment and I very much look forward to following Yanko on his journey further into his abilities and his blossoming adulthood. Another terrific Buroker book!

My Favorite Reads in 2015

I promised I’d be back with more posts and here’s another one for you. See how nice I am? Huzzah! In honor of #TuesdayBookBlog, I thought I’d give you a breakdown of my favorite reads from 2015. I read over 30 books in 2015 and I only had a few that stood out to me as being “favorites” material. Here are several that I really loved and would absolutely recommend.

#1] Republic by Lindsay Buroker – I will seriously read anything that woman writes. This is the eighth book in her Emperor’s Edge series and follows several character POVs. It gave us some post-earlier-series closure on several events that had occurred, as well as more insight into the characters’ motivations, relationships, and trajectories for the future. I would highly recommend any of her books to a new reader. If you love fantasy, scifi, steampunk, adventure, and slow-simmering romance, definitely give her Emperor’s Edge series a shot! The first book is free for you to check out and get hooked!!

#2] Mercenary Instinct by Ruby Lionsdrake – In 2015, I took my first foray into reading scifi romance with Ruby Lionsdrake’s Mandrake Company series. These books follow a group of space mercenaries as they get into all sorts of trouble in tandem with a small microbiotics business that rents a shuttle from them. It’s a quirky, fun, wild ride and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading more in this series. The first book (pictured above) is only $.99, so be sure to grab it!

#3] Mirror, Mirror Off the Wall by Kjerstin Gruys, Ph.D. – This is not my normal fantasy/scifi reading MO, but as someone who values positive body image and learning about ways to love yourself as you are, I was deeply intrigued by this author’s attempt to go an entire year without looking in a mirror. You heard me. An entire year. Sounds mighty ambitious and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Kjerstin’s experience and her thoughts on that journey she undertook. It was a really thought-provoking book and it had me seriously considering how often I look in the mirror and why.

What were your favorite books from 2015? Did you branch out and read something that was a different genre for you? Did you try out a new author? I’m always looking for recommendations, so hit me up with some of your favorite reads in 2015!

** Come hang out with me on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and Facebook! If you haven’t read any of my books but you love fantasy and sci-fi novels, consider giving my free novel Night Bells a try, or check me out on Wattpad! I love connecting with readers! **
