I’ve been really curious about something for a long time. How fun would it be to use Wattpad to “try out” a new story idea? Though I’m still hard at work on TFN3 (don’t worry, folks), I’ve had a new story idea rolling around in the back of my head, but I’m not entirely sure how “big” I want the project to be yet. I thought it might be fun to create a great cover and just start writing on Wattpad and see where it takes me. If I like it enough (and other people do, too), I might just finish it all up and publish it elsewhere.

Wattpad seems like the hot, “it” place right now. Lindsay Buroker has spoken several times about why she likes Wattpad, as have the likes of C.J. Archer and David Alastair Hayden. I’ve got the entirety of my first book, Night Bellsup there, but haven’t put up a sample of my second book yet. I also have about half of my novella The Dark Ship up (don’t plan to put the entire thing up at the moment, but maybe in the future). I’ve even played around with a small Haiku collection.

So far, I’ve garnered a few followers and comments//votes, but I honestly haven’t put in a lot of time there. Since I still have active day jobs (albeit, freelance contracting jobs where I make my own hours), book stuff has unfortunately not been in the forefront of my mind as much. I really want to spend more time writing and doing FUN writing stuff. I think Wattpad might speak to that part of myself that really needs that self-expression without the pressure of getting a book together for publishing unless I just WANT to. (And I DO still want to keep publishing regularly, I’m simply referring to a side project).

What are your thoughts on using Wattpad for the FUN of trying out a story project? Have you tried this in your own work? I’d love to hear about your stories//experiences! Share, share, share!

Using Wattpad as a Space to “Try Out” Stories?

  • Good luck with it. I’m sure you’d have a blast with it. A lot of people post in-progress work there, though I don’t know how many of them also self-publish. I thought about doing it once, but my WIPs are pretty rough and I got a bit self-conscious. I need Pepper Thorn’s first-reads and editing to make me look good.

    • Thanks for stopping by, David! It’s a pleasure to have you drop in. 🙂 Yeah, I think it has the potential to be a lot of fun, but I’m not sure if I’m going to do it yet. I tend to do some pretty massive rewrites between drafts, so I’m not sure it’s a good option for me. Then again, it might put some of the fun and “adventure” back into some of my writing. Who knows? That’s really cool that Pepper Thorn does your first-reads!!! I’m in awe of all you guys!!
